Mere Rodan Set to Fly Fiji’s Flag at 2025 Pacific Mini Games

Mere Rodan, 57, a Paralympic para table tennis player, is set to represent Fiji at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau. Mere Rodan, a 57-year-old Paralympian para table tennis player, is gearing up to fly Fiji’s flag at the upcoming 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau. With the event just 19 days away, Rodan, a mother of six who has been paralyzed from the waist down since 2006 due to sepsis, remains dedicated to making her country proud despite starting her training late.

In an interview, Rodan expressed her desire for an earlier start to her preparation, much like other teams. “We’ve just started our physio sessions. I wish we started earlier, like the other teams, but we’re making the most of the time we have,” she shared.

Rodan’s journey in para sports launched in 2014 through the “Smash Down Barriers” program, which introduced her to table tennis. Her rapid success was evident as she competed in the 2015 Oceania Championships, where she made headlines for defeating the top-ranked Australian player. This was just the beginning for Rodan, who also made a noteworthy appearance at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, confirming her place as one of Fiji’s leading para-athletes.

Hailing from Sinuvaca Village on Koro Island, Rodan reflected on how sports have significantly changed her life after enduring years of pain. “Before table tennis, I was just lying around. People tend to forget those with disabilities,” she said. Finding table tennis reignited her passion for life. She enthusiastically remembered telling herself during her first training night, “I want to be a champion,” a goal she feels she has achieved now.

As she prepares for what may be her last major regional event, Rodan aims to motivate others with disabilities, encouraging them to pursue their dreams. “If you enjoy something and commit to it, anything is possible,” she noted.

The Pacific Mini Games is scheduled to take place from June 29 to July 9, with Team Fiji set to leave the country on June 27. The iTatau ceremony is expected to be held on Wednesday, marking the team’s official send-off for the competition.
