Accusations of Political Manipulation by Zelenskyy

Kwesi Pratt Jnr., a notable figure in the Pan-African movement and a member of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, has made serious allegations against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He claims that Zelenskyy is attempting to exploit Ghana for his own political agenda, specifically targeting the fundamental Non-Aligned foreign policy championed by the nation’s founding father, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. In a bluntly worded article published in The Insight newspaper on July 17, 2025, Pratt cautioned the Ghanaian populace about allowing Zelenskyy to export his domestic troubles to their shores.

Discussion with Mahama Raises Concerns

Pratt Jr. points out that Zelenskyy recently reached out to former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, seemingly to discuss various projects once agreed upon with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. However, according to Pratt, this approach is fraught with inconsistency, especially since President Mahama has not publicly aligned Ghana with Ukraine and Israel in their ongoing conflicts. He emphasizes that Mahama has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire to both conflicts, positioning him as a more neutral party than his predecessor. Pratt criticizes Zelenskyy for prematurely disclosing what was presumably a private conversation with Mahama on his social media platform, X.

Concerns Over Ukraine’s Intentions

More troubling is the fact that the Ukrainian Embassy in Accra shared Zelenskyy’s call for cooperation in areas like drone production and border security, actions that Pratt believes threaten Ghana’s stability and rollout of meaningful dialogue with the Alliance of Sahel States and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He questions the wisdom of Ghana financing Ukraine’s military endeavors while facing its own economic hardships, particularly with a staggering power sector debt. Moreover, the notion that Ghana would help secure its borders is perplexing, given that the country’s security challenges are more domestic than related to international conflicts instigated by Ukraine’s partnerships in West Africa.

Media Complicity and Foreign Influence

Pratt’s article also underscores a disturbing pattern of media complicity, wherein some Ghanaian journalists have taken Zelenskyy’s statements at face value, neglecting to verify facts. This raises alarming questions about the integrity of reports suggesting that Ghana would fund drone production for Ukraine. Pratt cautioned that this may point to an overreach from the Ukrainian Embassy, potentially trying to sway the Ghanaian media landscape to serve its interests. He insists that Ghana must remain vigilant against foreign meddling that could compromise its sovereignty and adherence to Non-Aligned principles.

Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has issued grave warnings about President Zelenskyy’s overtures to Ghana, framing them as political maneuvers meant to undermine the country’s longstanding non-aligned foreign policy. His criticisms spotlight a broader concern regarding foreign interference in Ghanaian affairs and emphasize the need for a careful reassessment of any potential collaborations that could navigate between national and international interests. As the dialogue continues, staying informed and cautious remains vital for the nation moving forward.
