Joint military operations by Ugandan and Congolese forces led to the killing of 27 ADF terrorists and the rescue of 40 captives in Ituri province, revealing effective collaboration against terrorist activities in the region while recovering significant military equipment.

In a recent military operation, joint forces from the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Congolese Army (FARDC) successfully eliminated 27 members of the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) and rescued 40 individuals in a coordinated offensive dubbed “Operation Shujaa.” The engagement occurred in the Biakato and Mambasa territories, approximately 67 kilometers northwest of Beni in Ituri province. Major Bilal Katamba, spokesperson for the UPDF Mountain Division, reported that several other ADF militants were also injured during the encounter, which took place on September 24. The operation yielded significant results, including the recovery of nine firearms, which comprised eight sub-machine guns and one PK Machine Gun, alongside various other military supplies such as walkie-talkies, ammunition, and medical supplies. During this operation, one soldier from the joint coalition sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at UPDF Muhote Hospital. The 40 individuals rescued were identified predominantly as Ugandan nationals, with a significant number from the Busoga sub-region and included women and children. The ADF group is known to have affiliations with ISIS and the Islamic State of Central Africa Province (ISCAP).

The ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has seen various armed groups, including the ADF, engage in violent activities, often targeting civilians. The ADF has been labeled a terrorist organization by several international bodies due to its brutal tactics and connections to extremist ideologies, notably its affiliation with ISIS. The joint military operations between Uganda and the DRC aim to combat these threats, reduce violence, and restore security in the affected regions. Operation Shujaa is a response to the growing unrest and aims to dismantle ADF’s operational capacity while ensuring the safety of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

The successful execution of Operation Shujaa represents a significant advancement in the efforts to combat the ADF’s violent insurgency in the region. The collaboration between Ugandan and Congolese forces demonstrates a united front against terrorism, as evidenced by the elimination of 27 ADF fighters and the rescue of vulnerable civilians. Continued operations of this nature are essential to curbing the influence of such militant groups and enhancing the safety of citizens in affected areas.
