LINX to Enhance African Connectivity with New IXPs in Ghana and Kenya
LINX will expand its operations in Africa with new IXPs in Ghana and Kenya, set to launch in early 2025. The Accra IXP will enhance local connectivity, while Mombasa’s IXP will reinforce interconnection in East Africa. These initiatives aim to empower local ISPs and leverage the regions’ international cable systems.
The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has formally announced its plans to expand operations in Africa with the introduction of new internet exchange points (IXPs) in Ghana and Kenya during the first quarter of 2025. The LINX Accra IXP in Ghana will launch in phases, initially incorporating data centers from Onix and PAIX, enhancing redundancy and interconnectivity. Simultaneously, LINX Mombasa in Kenya will be established through a partnership with local data center operator iColo, marking the first IXP located at iColo’s MBA2 facility.
The establishment of additional IXPs by LINX signifies a strategic move to enhance digital connectivity across Africa. Ghana and Kenya are critical nodes due to their roles as landing points for multiple subsea cable systems, which facilitate international connectivity. The initiative aligns with LINX’s mission to improve interconnection services in these regions, thereby supporting local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and fostering a robust digital ecosystem.
In summary, LINX’s upcoming launch of IXPs in Ghana and Kenya exemplifies a commitment to advancing digital interconnectivity across Africa. By utilizing local infrastructure and capitalizing on international cable systems, LINX aims to strengthen the ISPs in these regions and enhance the overall connectivity landscape. Such developments are expected to significantly contribute to the effectiveness of internet traffic management in both West and East Africa.
