ATMIS Applauds Somalia-Ethiopia Agreement to Resolve Somaliland Dispute

The agreement, signed in Ankara, Turkey, was praised by Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the Special Representative of the African Union Commission for Somalia and Head of ATMIS, who characterized it as a significant step toward enhancing regional peace and stability. The African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat also commended the agreement reached on December 11 between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Ankara, facilitated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He recognized this diplomatic endeavor as a responsible initiative and urged prompt implementation of the agreed-upon actions. Tensions had previously risen following an earlier agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland that allowed Ethiopia access to the Red Sea while recognizing Somaliland’s independence, a move opposed by Somalia.
