NATO’s Special Representative Concludes First Official Visit to Egypt

NATO’s Special Representative Javier Colomina visited Egypt on September 17-18, 2024, to discuss NATO-Egypt relations and regional security. He emphasized Egypt’s importance as a partner and outlined three priorities to enhance engagement. Colomina met with key officials, including representatives from the League of Arab States and delivered a speech at the Institute of Diplomatic Studies.

Javier Colomina, NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, completed his inaugural visit to Egypt on September 17-18, 2024. In meetings with senior officials from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he evaluated the state of NATO-Egypt relations and discussed regional security concerns. Colomina emphasized Egypt’s status as a critical partner for NATO, expressing the intention to deepen the alliance, particularly in areas of significant interest to Egypt.

During his visit, the Special Representative articulated three main priorities aimed at enhancing NATO’s engagement in the Southern Neighbourhood. “It is vital that we strengthen dialogue and engagement with our Southern neighbourhood partners and other potential interlocutors in the region, which is more important than ever in the current regional context,” he stated. He further expressed the need for a cohesive approach towards NATO’s initiatives in the area to foster mutual understanding.

In addition to meetings with Egyptian officials, Colomina met with HE Mr. Hossam Zaki, the Assistant Secretary General of the League of Arab States, and the US Special Envoy for Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland. He also engaged with representatives from the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding and delivered a keynote address at the Institute of Diplomatic Studies.

NATO’s engagement with the Southern Neighbourhood, which includes countries in North Africa and the Middle East, is strategically significant due to the complex security challenges in the region. This visit by Javier Colomina serves as a critical step in reinforcing NATO’s partnerships and addressing regional threats collaboratively.
