Glamorgan Cricket Club has announced the signing of Sri Lankan pace bowler Asitha Fernando for the commencement of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old cricketer will join the Welsh county for the initial seven games of the County Championship Division Two, pending receipt of a No-Objection Certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket. Expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity, Fernando stated, “I would like to thank Glamorgan Cricket so much for this opportunity. I am extremely thrilled to be a part of Glamorgan and to return to the county cricket scene this year.” He further acknowledged the positive impact of his previous county cricket experience, stating that he looks forward to contributing to the team’s successes alongside fellow players such as Mason Crane and Colin Ingram.

Fernando’s international career began with a One Day International debut against Zimbabwe in July 2017, followed by his Test debut against South Africa in January 2021. Notably, he secured his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket during the second match against Bangladesh in May 2022, achieving remarkable figures of 6-51. His T20 International debut occurred in September 2022 against the same team.

His excellence in bowling was further showcased in August 2024, when he registered his second five-wicket haul (5-102) during the second Test against England at Lord’s, a performance that earned him a place on the Lord’s honours board, following in the footsteps of Rumesh Ratnayake. This accomplishment propelled him to eighth position in the International Cricket Council’s Test bowling rankings.

Mark Wallace, the Director of Cricket at Glamorgan, expressed his delight at Fernando’s signing, commenting, “We are delighted to be able to welcome a bowler of Asitha’s quality to Sophia Gardens for the start of the 2025 season.” Wallace added that Fernando’s prior experience in the UK would bring valuable insights and skills to the team, particularly following his commendable performances for Sri Lanka during their series against England last summer.

His signing for Glamorgan represents an important addition to the team’s bowling lineup for the upcoming 2025 season.
