Acholi Leaders in South Sudan and Uganda Unite for Peaceful Coexistence
Acholi community leaders from South Sudan and Uganda agreed on promoting peaceful coexistence and cooperation amid growing tensions along their common border. The meeting emphasized conflict resolution through local mechanisms and proposed initiatives to enhance security collaboration and repair critical infrastructure. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for February to further build confidence and address ongoing issues.
In a recent meeting held in Palabek Town, Lamwo District, high-ranking leaders from the Acholi communities of Eastern Equatoria State in South Sudan and Lamwo District in Uganda reached a consensus on promoting peaceful coexistence and enhancing collaborative efforts among their respective security forces. David Otim Okot, the Chairperson of the Acholi Community in South Sudan, indicated that this summit addressed existing border tensions that had been detrimental to trade and local interactions, stressing the importance of resolving conflicts through community-driven approaches.
During the meeting, leaders discussed how the ongoing disputes stemmed from misunderstandings and emphasized that the communities, historically united before colonial boundary divisions, should work together harmoniously. Key points raised included a comprehensive report from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces Division Commander regarding recent clashes along the border, which prompted the leaders to initiate a cooperative framework among the security forces of both nations to handle such criminal activities effectively.
The discussions also highlighted the necessity for both governments to expedite the verification and demarcation of the border to alleviate ongoing tensions. There was a collective appeal by the Acholi leaders for the South Sudanese government to repair the deteriorated infrastructure, specifically the roads and bridges in Magwi County, which currently hinder the free movement of goods and services.
Furthermore, the community leaders agreed to reconvene in February as a part of building trust and addressing further issues collaboratively. The meeting was attended by local chiefs, parliamentarians, and prominent elders from both regions, signifying a commitment to fostering peace and cooperation in the area.
The Acholi communities on both sides of the South Sudan-Uganda border have historically shared cultural and ethnic ties. However, colonial demarcations imposed artificial boundaries, creating tensions and conflicts over land and resources. In recent times, incidents of violence and miscommunication have exacerbated these challenges, necessitating a concerted effort by local leaders to seek resolution through dialogue and cooperation. The involvement of the military leadership from Uganda further underscores the importance of security in facilitating peaceful interactions across the border.
The consensus reached between the Acholi leaders signifies a positive step towards improving relations between the communities of South Sudan and Uganda. By prioritizing peaceful coexistence, cooperation among security forces, and infrastructural development, the leaders aim to resolve long-standing tensions and foster economic development along the border. Continued dialogue and collaborative efforts will be crucial in maintaining the trust and harmony established in this meeting.
