Ethiopia and Somalia have officially renewed their diplomatic relations following a visit by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Addis Ababa. During this meeting, President Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made a commitment to enhance bilateral relations through full diplomatic representation in each country’s capital. They emphasized that achieving regional stability necessitates robust cooperation founded on mutual trust, confidence, and respect. This rapprochement follows a peace agreement mediated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that was reached just a month prior.

Ethiopia and Somalia, two neighboring nations in the Horn of Africa, have experienced strained relations since a controversial land deal was established between Ethiopia and Somalia’s self-declared independent region, Somaliland. This agreement included Ethiopia leasing coastal land to create a maritime base and recognizing Somaliland’s independence, which Somalia viewed as a challenge to its sovereignty. In April 2024, tensions escalated when Somalia expelled the Ethiopian ambassador and withdrew its diplomatic representation in Ethiopia. The recent talks between the two leaders aim to mend these ties and foster cooperation in areas such as trade and security against extremist threats.
