Haiti and Mexico Joint Declaration on Migration Management
At the January 2025 Summit on Migration Management, countries including Mexico and Haiti adopted a joint declaration emphasizing the need for respectful dialogue, adherence to human rights, and the promotion of safe migration pathways. The declaration advocates for addressing the structural causes of migration and reiterates the importance of cooperation among governments, civil societies, and international organizations.
The recent Summit on the Management of Migration Flows, held on January 16 and 17, 2025, in Mexico, was chaired by President Claudia Sheinbaum and included representatives from ten countries: Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela. The meeting culminated in a joint declaration addressing critical aspects of migration management across the continent.
The first point of the declaration emphasizes the significance of open and constructive dialogue among nations to effectively manage migration challenges. It calls for adherence to international law and human rights in dealing with migration and urges a humanistic approach, particularly against the backdrop of potential mass deportations.
The declaration expresses solidarity with individuals compelled to leave their homes, asserting that migration should be a choice rather than a necessity. Furthermore, it affirms that all migrants, irrespective of their status, possess fundamental rights that governments are obliged to uphold.
Migration has increasingly become a critical issue in Latin America and the Caribbean due to various socio-economic factors, including poverty, violence, and political instability. The need for coordinated action among nations is underscored, particularly as migration patterns shift and more individuals seek to leave their countries of origin. This summit aimed to address these issues holistically and collaboratively, highlighting the shared responsibilities of the involved nations. The joint declaration outlines specific commitments and collaborative approaches that the participating countries intend to adopt to enhance the management of migration flows while protecting migrants’ rights. It emphasizes the need to create safe and regular pathways for migration, and to address the root causes of forced migration through sustainable development and cooperation with various stakeholders.
The joint declaration from the Summit signifies a unified commitment from participating nations to address migration with respect for human rights and dignity. By emphasizing dialogue, cooperation, and the need to tackle structural issues driving migration, the participating countries aim to promote a more humane and organized approach to migration management. This initiative highlights the importance of international collaboration in dealing with complex migration challenges effectively and compassionately.
