Escalating Violence in Democratic Republic of Congo Raises Global Concerns
Heavy fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced hundreds to flee Goma into Rwanda as the M23 rebel group makes significant territorial advances. Jean-Pierre LaCroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, emphasized the urgency of action, asserting, “At this critical juncture… MONUSCO remains committed to the robust defense of its mandate, under very challenging conditions.” Meanwhile, France has called for an emergency Security Council meeting, voicing support for the DRC and condemning the M23’s offensive actions being backed by Rwanda.
