Tensions Escalate in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo Amid M23 Conflict
Tensions are rising in Goma, DR Congo, where M23 rebels assert control amid accusations against Rwanda of military support. Congolese authorities are desperate for international intervention due to ongoing exploitation of minerals. The situation has resulted in casualties and mass displacement, raising concerns over regional stability as diplomatic dialogues continue without resolution.
Tensions remain heightened in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which is claimed by the M23 rebels. Congolese Foreign Trade Minister Julien Paluku Kahongya asserted that international attention is required as Rwanda allegedly continues to exploit Congolese minerals, including gold and the 3T minerals. He accused the Rwandan military of unlawfully engaging UN forces and disrupting essential utilities in Goma. Kahongya questioned whether the international community would take action against Rwandan President Paul Kagame given these grievances.
As tensions escalated over the M23 offensive, Kinshasa accused Kigali of sending troops into Goma. M23 political chief Corneille Nangaa claimed control over the city during a press conference, offering dialogue with the Congolese government, which was promptly rejected.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot recently visited Rwanda to discuss strong bilateral relations and regional peace strategies with President Kagame. This visit followed his trip to Kinshasa for talks with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi. Amid the chaos, protests occurred in Kinshasa targeting French and U.S. embassies due to the M23 offensive.
The recent M23 attacks resulted in over 100 casualties, including 17 peacekeepers, and caused mass displacement, with thousands fleeing, including international organization staff. In light of the situation, Uganda’s military has indicated its commitment to a defensive posture along its border to secure its interests and deter other armed groups from taking advantage of the crisis.
