The EU has reaffirmed its support for South Sudan’s transition to democracy, emphasizing the need for elections by December 2026. Deputy Head Lothar Jaschke highlighted the role of civil society and the National Electoral Commission in ensuring an inclusive electoral process. He also stressed the importance of public engagement and continued international support for a successful transition to a stable governance framework.

The European Union has reiterated its commitment to assisting South Sudan in establishing a stable, peaceful, and democratic society. During the launch of the policy brief “How to Hold Elections” in Juba, EU Deputy Head of Delegation, Lothar Jaschke, emphasized the need for concrete steps towards elections. He stated, “Let us take the first concrete step with the elections, accompanied by a strong civil society.”

Jaschke highlighted the potential for holding elections in December 2026, provided political decisions are made and the National Electoral Commission is empowered to prepare for the electoral timeline. He asserted, “It is possible to organize elections in December 2026 and to have an inclusive and transparent electoral process.” He underscored how elections foster participation in governance, create accountability, and legitimize leadership.

Addressing the current lack of a clear government plan for transitioning, Jaschke stressed the importance of public engagement regarding upcoming elections. He remarked, “Raising voices remains important, essential for a conducive environment, for political and civic space,” indicating that such discourse is vital for democracy’s ecosystem.

Further, Jaschke noted that any progress in the electoral process would facilitate international support, contrasting this with the discouragement stemming from current political stagnation. He reiterated that the EU is the largest donor focused on supporting an environment conducive to elections, declaring, “But elections are not an objective in itself; they should lead to something, to a peaceful and stable and democratic country.”

Finally, Jaschke reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to the peace process, having supported it since 2015. He stated, “Our overriding objective is peace,” and endorsed the continued Tumaini talks aimed at fostering a more inclusive peace framework.

The European Union has a long history of supporting electoral processes globally as a means to promote democracy and accountability. In the context of South Sudan, the EU is currently focusing on providing assistance and guidance to ensure that the nation can securely transition from conflict to a peaceful, democratic governance structure. This assistance is particularly pertinent given the significant political challenges and historical contexts that have shaped South Sudan since its independence in 2011.

The European Union has asserted strong support for South Sudan in its pursuit of democratic elections and stability. Lothar Jaschke emphasized the importance of a well-structured electoral process, which includes empowering civil society and the National Electoral Commission. He underscored the need for proactive engagement from the public and continuous international support to facilitate this transition successfully.
