Climate-Related Security Risks in the Lake Chad Region: A Critical Assessment
The Lake Chad region faces a humanitarian crisis intensified by climate change and conflict. Research indicates that climate change undermines livelihoods, increases vulnerabilities, and fuels resource-based conflicts. The Lake Chad region is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis exacerbated by both conflict and climate change. These environmental challenges, such as rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns, severely jeopardize the livelihoods of communities. Additionally, ongoing conflicts between armed groups and state security are diminishing individuals’ ability to adapt to climate risks, further complicating the existing vulnerabilities in the area. This article discusses findings from a comprehensive climate-security assessment conducted in Lake Chad to provide insight into the region’s dynamics.
Conducted by a locally-led research team, this assessment included 229 in-depth interviews with affected community members across Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. The participatory conflict analysis highlights how climate change interacts with the fragile security landscape of the region. It methodically evaluates the specific risks posed by climate change and guides potential response strategies for the Lake Chad area.
Four primary climate-fragility risks were identified: (i) climate and ecological changes contribute to increasing livelihood insecurities; (ii) vulnerability intensifies as conflict strains traditional coping mechanisms; (iii) conflicts over dwindling resources escalate; and (iv) livelihood insecurities are linked to the recruitment of individuals into armed groups. The findings underscore the necessity of considering climate risks when devising stabilization efforts to combat violence in the region.
