On February 4, 2025, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut. During their discussion, Al Thani emphasized Qatar’s steadfast support for Lebanon, pledging that Qatar will actively participate in the nation’s reconstruction efforts. He expressed hope for the quick establishment of a new government that aligns with the aspirations of the Lebanese populace.

Al Thani reiterated commitment to supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and stressed the necessity of enforcing UN Resolution 1701, which aims to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty. He condemned violations of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, detailing Israel’s actions since the resolution took effect on November 27, 2024, marking the end of a prolonged conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

President Aoun expressed gratitude for Qatar’s ongoing support, recognizing its significance during Lebanon’s trying times. Aoun acknowledged Qatar’s contributions to the economic development of Lebanon, particularly in the oil and gas sector, expressing eagerness to resume exploration activities in collaboration with France’s TotalEnergies.

In 2023, Qatar formalized a partnership with Lebanon through an agreement that allows its state-owned QatarEnergy to join TotalEnergies and Italy’s ENI in exploring oil and gas reserves in two maritime blocks off the Lebanese coast. During his visit, Al Thani also held discussions with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

This meeting occurs against the backdrop of ongoing challenges in Lebanon, including political instability and economic turmoil. Qatar has historically played a pivotal role in supporting Lebanon through financial assistance and development projects, particularly in the energy sector. The commitment to enforcing UN resolutions underscores the continued geopolitical complexities of the region and Lebanon’s relationship with its neighbors, particularly Israel.

The recent reaffirmation of Qatar’s support for Lebanon highlights a commitment to assist in national reconstruction and economic development. By engaging in collaborative energy projects and emphasizing the importance of regional stability, Qatar aims to strengthen its ties with Lebanon while promoting peace in the region. This partnership not only aids Lebanon in its recovery but also reflects Qatar’s proactive stance in Middle Eastern geopolitics.
