Daniel Noboa, Ecuador’s conservative millionaire president, is campaigning for reelection in 2025 after a surprising victory in 2023. He faces 15 candidates, including former rival Luisa González. Under his brief leadership, the homicide rate has dropped significantly, despite remaining high compared to previous years. However, his controversial crime-fighting tactics continue to spark debate regarding his governance style and use of power.

Daniel Noboa, the 37-year-old conservative millionaire and current president of Ecuador, is campaigning for reelection ahead of the election on February 9, 2025. His rise to power began with a surprising victory in the 2023 snap election, leading to a shortened mandate after then-President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the National Assembly. Noboa, an heir to a substantial fortune from the banana trade, has gained popularity for his aggressive crime-fighting tactics, with a notable decline in homicide rates during his brief term.

Having begun his political career in 2021, Noboa’s political journey has been swift, characterized by his role as a lawmaker and subsequent victory over leftist candidate Luisa González. He currently faces a competitive election, contending against 15 candidates including González, who is backed by former President Rafael Correa. To secure a direct victory, Noboa must capture either 50% of the votes or 40% with a ten-percentage-point lead, with a potential runoff scheduled for April 13.

During Noboa’s presidency, Ecuador witnessed a decrease in its homicide rate, dropping from 46.18 per 100,000 people in 2023 to 38.76 in the subsequent year. This drop has garnered him support from voters who acknowledge his efforts to combat violence, although the statistics still reveal a homicide rate significantly higher than in 2019. The security consultant Hugo Acero noted that such improvements could ensure Noboa’s reelection, barring a resurgence of violence.

Despite the noted decrease in crime, Noboa’s methods have been met with controversy. In January 2024, he declared a state of internal conflict to deploy military forces against organized crime, notably taking decisive actions like a controversial police raid on Mexico’s embassy to arrest a fugitive former vice president. Critics argue that Noboa utilizes legal mechanisms to further his agenda, raising concerns over his adherence to constitutional norms and the implications of his presidential powers.

Daniel Noboa’s election to the presidency marks a significant moment in Ecuadoran politics. His unexpected victory in 2023 highlighted a shift in voter sentiment toward a candidate with a background in business rather than traditional politics. Noboa’s military-led strategies against organized crime reflect the citizens’ frustrations with rising violence and crime rates in Ecuador. As he runs for a full term, the political landscape remains fractured, highlighted by his rivalry with traditional leftist figures.

In summary, Daniel Noboa is positioning himself as a strong candidate for reelection, leveraging his success in reducing crime during his tenure. However, his controversial methods raise important questions about governance and the balance between security and civil liberties. As Ecuadorians prepare to vote, the impact of his policies on public safety and accountability will be pivotal in shaping the country’s future.
