Ecuador’s Luisa Gonzalez Claims Election Victory Amid Results Deadlock

Luisa Gonzalez claims victory in Ecuador’s general election despite trailing incumbent Daniel Noboa in preliminary results. Gonzalez emphasizes her party’s best performance in a decade and criticizes Noboa’s use of state resources during his campaign. The elections took place under the context of rising violence and crime in Ecuador, with over 13.7 million voters participating.

Ecuadoran presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez declared victory in the recent general election, although results currently indicate a close contest with incumbent Daniel Noboa, who sits marginally ahead. As provisional results show Gonzalez obtaining 43.83 percent of the votes compared to Noboa’s 44.75 percent with 69 percent of ballots counted, she maintains that her party achieved a significant outcome despite being positioned in second place.

Gonzalez, representing the Citizen Revolution party, noted that this election marks the best performance for her party in a decade and its strongest first-round showing without former President Rafael Correa as a candidate. She expressed confidence, stating, “We are almost in a technical tie, and we are going to continue growing in votes and Daniel Noboa is going to continue falling.”

She emphasized that her collective efforts should symbolize hope and change, contrasting her stance with Noboa’s approach, which she claims involved misuse of state resources for campaigning. Gonzalez accused Noboa of utilizing state properties unlawfully, stating, “He has violated all legal regulations…He has made use of his power to issue decrees to name a new vice president.” She called for unity amongst Ecuadoreans to establish a peaceful society based on social justice.

Over 13.7 million citizens participated in the elections aimed at selecting national officials for the 2025-2029 term, which included voting for the presidency, vice presidency, and parliamentary seats. The elections were conducted amid an “internal armed conflict” declared by Noboa to address the significant rise in violence and crime over the past year, which saw Ecuador experiencing record homicide rates in Latin America.

In conclusion, Luisa Gonzalez has proclaimed victory in the first round of Ecuador’s presidential elections, despite preliminary results showing her trailing slightly behind Daniel Noboa. Her campaign highlighted significant milestones for her party, and she criticized Noboa’s conduct during the election process. The electoral context reflects the ongoing challenges of violence in Ecuador, with citizens seeking a leader who can provide hope and effective governance.
