On February 10, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit Morocco, centered in Chefchaouen. This followed significant earthquakes in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands, as well as smaller quakes in California and Alaska, indicating a surge in seismic activity globally. Emergency protocols were activated but later deemed unnecessary as tsunami threats passed swiftly.
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on February 10, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Chefchaouen at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles). At the time of reporting, the USGS confirmed it received 420 reports from individuals who felt the tremor.
On the same day, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Vanuatu, also reported by the USGS. This earthquake’s epicenter was in Port-Vila and occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers (about 11.9 miles). It was noted that the Vanuatu event preceded the Morocco earthquake by mere hours.
Prior to these events, on February 8, a significant 7.6-magnitude earthquake was reported in the Cayman Islands. This earthquake, centered in George Town, was measured at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles). A tsunami warning was issued along the Mexican coast but was lifted two hours later, affirming the situation was under control.
In the aftermath, the National Weather Service Warning Center stated, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed.” They clarified that there were no alerts for the United States or international partners, although some regions may observe unusual currents, advising vigilance.
Earlier seismic activity included a 3.4-magnitude earthquake in California, centered in Petrolia at a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles) on February 7. This event followed a 2.9-magnitude earthquake in the same region, which was reported on February 6 at a depth of 4.4 kilometers (approximately 2.7 miles). The California quakes were additionally preceded by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Alaska on February 5, centered in Sustina at a depth of 5.4 kilometers (around 3.4 miles).
Recent seismic activity has been notable with multiple earthquakes recorded in various locations, including Morocco, Vanuatu, and the Cayman Islands, all within a short span of time. Emergency alerts such as the tsunami warning have been managed effectively. Monitoring efforts by the USGS and the National Weather Service continue to provide critical information and safety updates for affected regions.
