A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco, with its epicenter in Chefchaouen. This event followed significant tremors in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands, resulting in a tsunami warning that was later lifted along the Mexican coast. A series of earthquakes were reported across various regions leading up to these events, emphasizing the global nature of seismic activity.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Morocco on Monday, February 10, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Chefchaouen, at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles). At the time of publication, the USGS had received 420 reports from individuals who experienced the tremor.

This seismic event in Morocco followed a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu on the same day. Centered in Port-Vila, this earthquake occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers (around 11.9 miles). In a related series of events, the Vanuatu earthquake also came after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Cayman Islands, which took place on Saturday, February 8, with its epicenter in George Town at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Before the earthquake in the Cayman Islands, a tsunami warning had been issued along the Mexican coastline but was lifted two hours later. The National Weather Service Warning Center stated, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed. There are no alerts posted for the United States or International Partners.” They further noted that unusual currents might be observed in certain areas, advising to exercise normal caution.

In addition to these seismic activities, the Cayman Islands’ earthquake followed a 3.4-magnitude tremor in California on Friday, February 7. This earthquake, centered in Petrolia, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Notably, it followed a prior 2.9-magnitude quake also registered in Petrolia on Thursday, February 6, which was at a depth of 4.4 kilometers. Furthermore, this sequence of earthquakes continued after a 4.3-magnitude quake in Alaska on Wednesday, February 5, centered in Sustina at a depth of 5.4 kilometers.

In summary, a series of seismic events has recently impacted various regions, including a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Morocco and significant tremors in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands. The National Weather Service has confirmed the tsunami threat has subsided following the earthquake events along the Mexican coastline. This highlights the importance of preparedness and awareness of earthquake risks in affected areas.
