The Climate Risk Index 2025 by Germanwatch indicates that India is among the top ten countries affected by extreme weather from 1993 to 2022, facing over USD 180 billion in losses and approximately 80,000 fatalities due to climate-related events. The report emphasizes the urgent need for increased climate finance to support vulnerable countries battling these crises.

The Climate Risk Index 2025 report by Germanwatch highlights that between 1993 and 2022, India ranked among the ten most affected countries due to climate-related extreme weather events. Dominica, China, and Honduras topped the list. India has faced numerous challenges, including floods and heatwaves during this period, recording significant fatalities and economic losses due to these events, which collectively caused approximately USD 180 billion in damages.

The findings from the Climate Risk Index illustrate the severe impacts of extreme weather events on vulnerable nations, particularly in the Global South. The urgency for increased climate finance and support from developed nations must be prioritized to mitigate future losses and address the pressing climate crisis effectively. Without substantial contributions towards adaptation and mitigation efforts, the human and economic costs are expected to escalate.
