Reform UK’s Richard Tice Refutes Human-Caused Climate Change Claims

During a Sky News interview, Reform UK’s Richard Tice dismissed the scientific consensus on human-induced climate change, labeling it as “garbage.” He insisted that climate variations have occurred historically without human intervention. Experts, including a UN group of international scientists, have countered by asserting that human activities, particularly fossil fuel usage, are significant contributors to current climate change, raising alarm over its unprecedented speed.

Richard Tice, the deputy leader of Reform UK, has publicly dismissed the scientific consensus on human-induced climate change, referring to it as “garbage.” In an interview with Sky News’ Ali Fortescue, he claimed, “There’s no evidence that man-made CO2 is going to change climate change.” Tice asserted that climate fluctuations have occurred for millions of years and will continue to do so regardless of human impact.

Fortescue countered Tice’s stance by referencing a report from the UN’s IPCC, which comprises findings from over 200 international scientists. The report unequivocally states that human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, have significantly contributed to recent climate changes, noting that they have contributed to warming across the atmosphere, oceans, and land. Tice, however, rejected this evidence, stating, “No, that’s absolute garbage.”

While it is true that Earth’s climate has changed for millennia, scientists express concern regarding the current rate of change, which they believe is unprecedented in the last 10,000 years. NASA has reported, “the current warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years,” emphasizing the alarming speed of these changes compared to historical patterns.

Professor Sheila Rowan, vice president of the Royal Society, highlighted that the evidence linking fossil fuels and human actions to climate change is clear. Dr. Andrew Jarvis of Lancaster University criticized Tice’s comments as “categorically wrong.” The overwhelming majority of scientific studies (over 99%) indicate that climate change is largely caused by human activities, contrasting with Tice’s claim of support from a supposed “thousand” scientists.

Bob Ward, policy director at the Grantham Research Institute, labeled Tice’s assertions as “pure misinformation,” underlining that no credible scientific organization endorses his views on climate change. Professor Ed Hawkins from Reading University noted the distinction between natural climate factors, which shift slowly, and the rapid warming observed over recent decades, indicating that this unprecedented warming has already raised global temperatures by 1.3C since the industrial era.

In recent developments, Mr. Tice proposed imposing taxes on the renewable energy sector and discarding the UK’s net zero target if elected. He attributed rising energy costs and the deindustrialization of Britain to such policies. Despite Reform UK’s limited representation of five MPs, they have recently topped a poll of voters, albeit by a very narrow margin.

Professor Hawkins remarked that solutions to climate change would not only enhance energy security but would also improve air quality and reduce costs for all citizens. He cautioned that the costs of inaction will escalate each year. Research indicates that about two-thirds of Reform UK voters believe the government should prioritize climate action, although they express lesser enthusiasm for climate policies compared to other voter groups.

Despite the overwhelming consensus on human influence, Tice continues to propagate misinformation, supported by a minor faction rather than the broader scientific community.
