A delegation from Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has arrived in Namibia to participate in the state funeral of Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the country’s founding president. Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, the CCM Secretary-General, leads the delegation, which landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport on February 26, 2025. The delegation was warmly received by Caesar Waitara, Tanzania’s Ambassador to Namibia.
The CCM delegation will engage in various commemorative events beginning February 27, 2025, as they pay tribute to Dr. Nujoma. They will take part in a national memorial service on February 28, before attending the official state funeral on March 1, 2025, at Heroes’ Acre cemetery in Windhoek.
SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party and a long-term ally of CCM, has organized these ceremonies to honor Dr. Nujoma. The ties between Tanzania and Namibia have a historical significance, rooted in their shared liberation struggle against colonialism and apartheid. Dr. Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, 2025, was a key figure in Namibia’s fight for independence.
The CCM’s attendance at Dr. Nujoma’s state funeral underscores the close relationship between Tanzania and Namibia, as well as the legacy of solidarity between their respective liberation movements. Dr. Nujoma’s contributions to Namibia’s independence are commemorated through these ceremonial events, reflecting both national and regional ties.
