A delegation from Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, led by Secretary-General Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, arrived in Namibia to attend the state funeral of founding president Dr. Sam Nujoma. The delegation will engage in various tribute events from February 27 to March 1, 2025. The funeral reflects the longstanding historical relationship between Tanzania and Namibia, established during the liberation struggle against colonial rule and apartheid.
A delegation from Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has arrived in Namibia to attend the state funeral of Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the country’s founding president. The CCM Secretary-General, Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, is leading this delegation, which landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport on February 26, 2025, and was received by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Namibia, Caesar Waitara.
The CCM delegation’s participation will commence with a series of commemorative events starting February 27, 2025. On February 28, 2025, Dr. Nchimbi will attend a national memorial service before the official state funeral at Heroes’ Acre cemetery scheduled for March 1, 2025. These events are organized by Namibia’s ruling party, SWAPO, which has maintained a long-standing alliance with CCM since the liberation struggle.
Tanzania and Namibia share a deep-rooted historical connection, dating back to the days of the liberation movement against colonial rule and apartheid. During the 1960s, several SWAPO leaders, including Dr. Nujoma, sought refuge in Tanzania, facilitating the establishment of SWAPO as a key political entity that eventually contributed to Namibia’s independence in 1990.
Dr. Sam Nujoma, who played a critical role as a guerrilla leader during Namibia’s struggle for independence, passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, 2025. He was honored as the “Founding Father of the Namibian Nation” through an act of parliament in 2005, solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in Namibia’s history.
The arrival of the CCM delegation in Namibia for Dr. Sam Nujoma’s state funeral underscores the enduring bond between Tanzania and Namibia, rooted in a shared history of liberation and cooperation. The planned commemorative events reflect respect for Dr. Nujoma’s contributions as an anti-colonial leader and the importance of his legacy to both nations. The funeral will not only honor his memory but also reinforce the ties binding the two countries together.
