Senegal’s U17 national football team, known as the Lionceaux, has intensified their preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This follows their successful unbeaten run in a friendly tournament held in Casablanca. The AFCON tournament is scheduled to occur from March 30 to April 19 in Morocco, making these preparations crucial for their campaign.

Upon returning to Dakar, the team has re-engaged in rigorous training sessions and has planned a series of test matches aimed at enhancing their performance before the tournament. Head coach Pape Ibrahima Faye has expressed contentment with the team’s current progress, though he acknowledges the necessity for further improvement in various aspects of their game.

Faye emphasized, “We won against Zambia 5-0, drew with Morocco, and defeated Egypt. It’s encouraging, but there is still work to be done. On a tactical, physical, and even mental level, the players are progressing well, but we must continue in this direction.”

Despite their satisfactory performance in Casablanca, the coaching staff is focused on refining critical aspects of the squad’s game to ensure optimal fitness ahead of the tournament. The Lionceaux are scheduled to compete against Senegal’s U20 team as well as clubs from both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 to maintain match fitness and tactical sharpness, offering the young players valuable experience.

Furthermore, the team is contemplating joining an international tournament in Turkey, which would expose them to varying styles of play. Coach Faye noted, “We have submitted our action plan and hope to play in this tournament. It would be a great opportunity for our players to test themselves against different opponents.”

As the reigning champions seek to defend their U17 AFCON title, the preparation phase is deemed pivotal for ensuring the team arrives at peak performance. The coaching staff and players remain committed to fine-tuning their tactical strategies, strengthening team dynamics, and preparing thoroughly for competition when the tournament commences in late March.
