Iraq Supports Ocalan’s Call for PKK Dissolution to Enhance Regional Stability

Iraq has backed Abdullah Ocalan’s request for the PKK to disband, viewing it as a crucial step towards enhancing regional stability. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s support reflects efforts to strengthen relations with Turkey, especially in light of ongoing security issues posed by the PKK’s presence in Iraq. A military cooperation agreement between Iraq and Turkey further illustrates this commitment.
Iraq has officially supported the call from Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned founder of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), for the disbanding of the militant group. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry described this move as pivotal for improving regional stability and security, particularly given the historical tensions between Baghdad and Ankara over the PKK’s activities in Iraq.
In a recent statement, the ministry noted that Ocalan’s appeal for the PKK to cease its armed struggle represents an encouraging step towards enhancing security throughout the region, asserting that “political solutions and dialogue are the best way to resolve differences and end conflicts”. Ocalan, who has been held in solitary confinement since 1999, emphasized the need for all factions to disarm in a declaration made from his prison cell.
The PKK’s presence in Iraq, specifically within the autonomous Kurdistan region, complicates Baghdad’s relations with Ankara. Turkey has long conducted military operations against the PKK in areas where it maintains military bases. Despite recently categorizing the PKK as a banned organization, Turkey is advocating for Iraq to officially recognize the group as a terrorist organization.
In August, a significant military cooperation agreement was established between Iraq and Turkey, aimed at combating the PKK through joint operations. In its recent announcement, the Iraqi foreign ministry expressed optimism that the PKK would promptly take steps toward disarmament, reaffirming Iraq’s intention to foster strong bilateral relations with Turkey.
Iraq’s endorsement of Ocalan’s call for the PKK to dissolve indicates a shift towards prioritizing regional stability. The Iraqi government is seeking to strengthen its ties with Turkey while addressing the security concerns posed by the PKK’s insurgency. This initiative underscores the importance of political dialogue as a means to resolve ongoing conflicts in the region.
