Liberia: Nimba Lawmaker Advocates for Resuming Internal Audit

Nyah Flomo, a lawmaker from Nimba County, has called for the resumption of a halted internal audit of the House of Representatives. He stressed the importance of fighting corruption and ensuring transparency, referencing both House rules and the Constitution. The audit’s delay has been contentious, with some lawmakers reportedly refusing to cooperate. The response from the Majority Bloc will indicate their stance on accountability.
Nimba County District Two Representative Nyah Flomo has urgently requested that the 55th House of Representatives facilitate the continuation of an internal audit by the General Auditing Commission (GAC). During a plenary session on February 27, 2025, he emphasized the critical need for this audit to combat corruption and promote accountability within the legislative branch, particularly following the audit’s unexpected suspension last year.
Rep. Flomo reaffirmed the House’s commitment to fighting corruption by citing Rule 44.1, which obligates members to exemplify integrity. He also referenced Chapter 2, Article 5, Subsection (c) of Liberia’s 1986 Constitution, which addresses the need to eradicate corruption, nepotism, and the misappropriation of government assets through both legislative and executive actions.
Representative Nyah Flomo’s appeal highlights an urgent need for transparency and accountability in the House of Representatives through the resumption of the GAC’s audit. The ongoing resistance from certain lawmakers raises questions about governance and integrity within the legislature. The upcoming decision from the Majority Bloc will be pivotal in determining the commitment to anti-corruption measures and public accountability.
