Heavy rains have caused substantial damage to infrastructure and prompted government action, including search and rescue operations. Citizens have been advised to exercise caution and stay informed about weather updates.

Harare: The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) has reported that 60 individuals have lost their lives, and an additional nine have sustained injuries due to rainfall-related incidents in Zimbabwe since the rainy season commenced last October. Following a period of below-average rainfall from October through December 2024, the nation has faced heavy precipitation starting in January, leading to numerous rain-related disasters, such as drownings and lightning strikes.

The persistent heavy rains have severely impacted public infrastructure, damaging essential facilities, including schools, health centers, roads, bridges, dams, and irrigation systems. In light of these events, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has offered his condolences to the bereaved families, as stated by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe. He expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and the extensive damage inflicted upon vital public infrastructure.

Minister Garwe has urged artisanal miners to cease their operations until conditions improve and advised citizens to seek shelter during storms, avoid crossing flooded areas, and remain updated with reliable weather forecasts. The DCP is actively engaged in search and rescue efforts in collaboration with law enforcement and the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, while the government is mobilizing resources towards recovery initiatives.

In summary, Zimbabwe has experienced significant rainfall-related challenges, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. The government emphasizes the importance of safety measures during such extreme weather. Efforts are underway to assist affected communities and rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, underlining the state’s commitment to recovery and prevention.
