Lebanese President Joseph Aoun Accuses Israel of Violating Cease-Fire

In a recent interview with the Saudi-owned, UK-based newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun criticized Israel for its ongoing military presence in Lebanon, deeming it unnecessary given modern surveillance technologies. He emphasized that with the capabilities of drones and satellites, the locations occupied by Israel hold little strategic value.

Furthermore, President Aoun revealed that he is actively engaging with French and American mediators to urge Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory. He expressed concern regarding the lack of pressure from the United States on Israel to facilitate this withdrawal, noting, “If the American administration, until now, did not pressure Israel to leave Lebanese territory, it means either that there is no desire to do so or that it is waiting for the appropriate time, I don’t know.” Despite his concerns, he acknowledged the importance of maintaining relations with the United States due to its global influence.

Having assumed the presidency following the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and the assassination of prominent Hezbollah figures, Aoun articulated the weariness of the Lebanese people over continuous strife. He stated, “In all honesty Lebanon is tired. The Lebanese are tired of others fighting their wars on our land. We deserve economic and political recovery.”
