Ethiopia Engages in First BRICS Sherpas Meeting in Brasilia

An Ethiopian delegation, led by National Bank Governor Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, is attending the First BRICS Sherpas Meeting in Brasilia. Mamo reiterated Ethiopia’s support for multilateral solutions to global challenges and emphasized the importance of joining the New Development Bank as a priority for 2025. The meeting focuses on several key priorities under Brazil’s 2025 BRICS presidency, including global health and governance reforms.
An Ethiopian delegation, headed by Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, Governor of the National Bank and Ethiopia’s BRICS Sherpa, is attending the inaugural Meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas for 2025, currently underway in Brasilia, Brazil. The meeting was inaugurated by Mauro Viera, Brazil’s Minister of External Affairs, and includes the participation of Ambassador Mesganu Arga, the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, who serves as Ethiopia’s Sous Sherpa.
During the meeting, Mamo emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to multilateralism and a collective security framework based on the United Nations system. He advocated for a reformed global order to effectively address and manage increasingly complex global challenges. Furthermore, Mamo highlighted that joining the New Development Bank is a significant priority for Ethiopia by 2025.
He called for increased intra-BRICS economic collaboration and underscored the importance of fulfilling core objectives and initiatives within the BRICS framework. Brazil’s BRICS presidency in 2025 is based on six critical priorities: global health, reform of global governance, climate finance, governance in artificial intelligence, cooperation among the Global South, and BRICS institutional advancement. The discussions at this meeting will continue over a two-day schedule to address various agenda items.
Ethiopia’s active participation in the BRICS Sherpas meeting underlines its commitment to multilateralism and enhancing its economic integration within the BRICS framework. The country views membership in the New Development Bank as a pivotal element of its development strategy for 2025. The ongoing discussions focus on key global issues, reflecting Ethiopia’s aspirations to play a significant role in international dialogue and cooperation.
