Türkiye: A Beacon of Hope for Sudanese Students Amidst Civil Strife
Amid the civil war in Sudan, Türkiye has offered refuge and educational opportunities for displaced Sudanese students through its Guest Universities Initiative, enabling students from Al-Butana University to continue their studies at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University. This effort addresses the disruption caused by conflict and aims to facilitate students’ contributions to their homeland post-education.
Türkiye is emerging as a sanctuary for Sudanese students whose education has been disrupted by ongoing civil conflict. Through the Guest Universities Initiative, students from Al-Butana University have begun their studies at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University, facilitated by Türkiye’s Council of Higher Education. This initiative aims to resume academic pursuits in a safer environment.
Since the onset of violent clashes in Sudan on April 15, 2023, resulting from military disputes, nearly 20,000 lives have been lost whilst millions face displacement and severe humanitarian crises. Many universities, including Al-Butana University, have sustained damage, impeding academic activities. In light of this, the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education sought assistance from Türkiye, leading to the creation of the initiative.
The Guest University Initiative has successfully relocated 18 individuals from Al-Butana University, enabling them to continue their education at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University in a model designed for ease of transition. This collaborative effort not only protects the educational experiences of students but also aims for their eventual return to Sudan to contribute to national development.
Erol Ozvar, President of Türkiye’s Higher Education Council, explained that the initiative stemmed from a desire to support Sudanese universities during a time of distress and prevent their closure. The council received a warm response from Sudan, leading to the establishment of this supportive model for education.
Ozvar noted that ample numbers of Sudanese administrators and students have resumed their studies at designated Turkish institutions. He expressed hope that Sudan’s universities will reopen once peace is restored. Moreover, the Turkish university model has fostered an environment of academic safety and growth, ensuring continuity in education amidst hostility.
The Al-Butana University Rector, Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud, underscored the profound impact of this initiative, crediting Türkiye as a pivotal ally. Transitioning to online learning was ineffective due to inadequate resources, making Türkiye’s responsive assistance invaluable. Mohmoud pledged to improve Sudan’s educational system upon his return.
Students, including Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla and Rashida Ebrahim Hussein, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study in advanced facilities. Their experiences in Turkish institutions are designed to provide practical knowledge that they intend to apply upon returning home to contribute positively to Sudan’s development.
Türkiye stands as a critical support system for Sudanese students during a tumultuous period marked by civil unrest. The collaborative efforts between Turkish and Sudanese educational institutions signify a commitment to academic continuity and restoration. Students are not only continuing their education but are also being equipped with skills to foster future improvements in Sudan.
