Baringo Senator William Cheptumo Eulogized as a Peacemaker and Patriot

Leaders across the political spectrum paid tribute to the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, commemorating his legacy as a peacemaker and dedicated public servant. President Ruto praised Cheptumo’s efforts in promoting peace and humility, reflecting on his significant political career. Numerous leaders urged for unity and emulation of Cheptumo’s respectful political practices amidst his tragic passing.
In a heartfelt tribute, leaders from various political factions gathered to honor the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo as both a peacemaker and a patriot. Thousands of mourners convened at Arap Moi Secondary School in Bartabwa, Baringo County, to commemorate Cheptumo’s distinguished political tenure, during which he served three terms as the Baringo North Member of Parliament before transitioning to the Senate.
President William Ruto and key legislative figures highlighted Cheptumo’s dedication to peaceful politics, urging unity among Kenyans. The President noted that Cheptumo’s Christian values and commitment to peace were instrumental in reducing banditry in the Kerio Valley by 70%. “He was a peacemaker and was a great resource during the 2007 negotiations that led to the grand coalition government after the post-election violence,” said President Ruto.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised Cheptumo as a symbol of humility, indicating that the region was fortunate to have leaders of his caliber. Additionally, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula remarked on Cheptumo’s exemplary conduct, stating that he was never reprimanded during his 15 years as an MP, a testament to his respect and demeanor.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also reflected on the loss of a respected figure, calling Cheptumo a peace ambassador. Senator Ledama Ole Kina echoed this sentiment, underscoring Cheptumo’s contributions to his constituents and advocating for the rapid establishment of the IEBC to fill the gap created by his passing.
Both Haron Cheruiyot and Kimani Ichungwa, majority leaders of the Senate and National Assembly respectively, lauded Cheptumo’s respectful and dedicated nature. They commended President Ruto’s outreach efforts to his political opponents, urging all leaders and citizens to take inspiration from this inclusive approach to governance.
The late Senator Cheptumo is survived by his wife, Hannah Wendot Cheptumo, and their three children. He was a qualified lawyer who worked with the Kenya Commercial Bank and the Central Bank of Kenya before engaging in private legal practice in 2005. He also held an Assistant Minister position for Justice, National Cohesion, and Constitutional Affairs between 2007 and 2013.
