Polisario Seeks Support in Uruguay Amidsetbacks in South America

Uruguay has recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) since December 26, 2005, after the left-wing coalition, Frente Amplio, assumed power in 2004.
Notably, the transition to a center-right presidency under Luis Lacalle Pou in December 2019 did not alter Uruguay’s stance regarding recognition of the SADR. However, the Polisario Front faces challenges in South America, indicated by recent withdrawals of recognition from Panama and Ecuador. Furthermore, a resolution from the Colombian Congress on February 14 urged President Gustavo Petro to reconsider his previous decision regarding the SADR.
