Political Opposition Unites Against Venezuela’s Aggression, Calls for Action

Amid Venezuela’s aggressive actions, Guyana’s political opposition is rallying with the government to uphold the nation’s territorial integrity. Key political figures, including President Irfaan Ali and Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, emphasize a robust response, while several parties call for strategic planning and recruitment to enhance national defense against external threats.
In light of Venezuela’s recent hostile actions, the political opposition in Guyana has come together with the government to demand respect for the nation’s territorial integrity. President Irfaan Ali convened discussions with Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton and his team to address these developments. The Alliance For Change (AFC) condemned Venezuela’s incursion into Guyana’s territorial waters, characterizing it as an overt act of aggression.
The AFC asserted that the area in question, which includes the Liza offshore well, falls squarely within Guyana’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone. They emphasized the necessity of denouncing Venezuela’s actions as unlawful and reckless, declaring their unwavering support for the Guyana Government and its Armed Forces. This sentiment was echoed by the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), which publicly condemned Venezuela’s moves.
At a recent press conference, WPA co-leader David Hinds expressed on behalf of the alliance that Venezuela is not only probing Guyana’s resolve regarding its borders but also testing the commitment of Guyana’s allies, particularly the United States. He urged the government to adopt a more assertive stance against Venezuela’s encroachments, criticizing the current focus on internal political conflicts rather than on this external threat.
Hinds further noted the importance of developing a national strategy in conjunction with international support, advocating for the establishment of a multi-party Border Cabinet. This committee would include representatives from all political parties, civil society groups, and security experts to continuously assess the situation and guide the government’s responses. He posited that opposition members should not be marginalized in discussions of national security issues.
In addition to strategic planning, Hinds recommended a recruitment drive for the Guyana Defense Force to bolster its capabilities. He also suggested enhancing the People’s Militia to assist the Defense Force in safeguarding the nation. A New and United Guyana reiterated its commitment to supporting Guyana’s sovereignty and encouraged a peaceful resolution through appropriate legal channels, standing firmly with the government in this endeavor.
In summary, Venezuela’s aggressive actions have prompted a unified response from Guyana’s political opposition alongside the government. Both the AFC and WPA have called for stronger measures to protect Guyana’s territorial integrity and proposed collaborative policymaking to address this pressing issue. The focus now lies on mobilizing national and international support to effectively respond to Venezuela’s provocations and ensure the security of Guyana’s borders.
