Rwanda Critiques Canada’s Position on DR Congo Conflict
Rwanda sharply criticized Canada over allegations of its involvement in the DR Congo crisis, calling Canadian statements defamatory. Canada, which imposed sanctions on Rwanda, claims this action is necessary due to Rwanda’s support of the M23 faction. Rwanda contended that Canada is ignoring the DRC’s violations against its civilians and asserted its commitment to regional mediation efforts.
The Rwandan government has expressed its strong disapproval of a statement issued by Global Affairs Canada regarding the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The March 3 announcement, signed by Canadian ministers Mélanie Joly, Ahmed Hussen, and Mary Ng, accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 faction in the conflict and resulted in the imposition of sanctions against Rwanda. Rwanda termed the Canadian statement as defamatory, shameful, and unacceptable.
In response to the accusations, Rwanda indicated that Canada’s claims ignore the realities of the situation, specifically mentioning that Canada cannot support peace efforts while attributing blame exclusively to Rwanda. The Rwandan government criticized Canada for failing to hold the DRC accountable for ongoing violence, particularly the attacks on Banyamulenge villages in South Kivu carried out by the DRC’s armed forces and allied groups.
In a further escalation, Canada announced a suspension of permits for the export of certain goods to Rwanda, along with possible reviews of its engagement with Rwanda at international events. Rwanda has stated that these measures will not contribute to resolving the conflict and reiterated its commitment to work with regional leaders for a solution while ensuring its national security.
Rwanda’s condemnation of Canada’s stance reflects a broader narrative regarding the complexities of the ongoing conflict in the DRC.
