Saudi Arabia had previously imposed a ban on imports from Lebanon, citing concerns over drug smuggling in shipments. The kingdom had halted imports of Lebanese fruits and vegetables in April 2021 and enacted travel restrictions amid strained relations following the influence of Hezbollah, an Iran-aligned group. Nevertheless, in 2019, Saudi Arabia was Lebanon’s primary market for agricultural exports, accounting for more than 22% of total Lebanese agricultural trade.
During the recent discussions, both nations underscored the importance of a resolution to the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territories, aligning themselves with a ceasefire established in November. Additionally, following his arrival in Saudi Arabia, President Aoun expressed intentions to explore the possibility of reactivating military aid to Lebanon, which was previously suspended due to concerns regarding Hezbollah’s influence on the Lebanese army.
This meeting marks a significant shift in Saudi Arabia’s approach to Lebanese politics after years of distancing itself from the country, especially in light of Hezbollah’s diminished power post-conflict last year with Israel.
