Inkosi Brou has won Nigeria’s first medal at the 2025 African Junior Fencing Championships, showcasing his talent and enhancing Nigeria’s international fencing reputation. Fellow fencer Peluola Akinbamiro faced a setback but remained focused. The Nigerian Fencing Federation aims to promote the sport further with strategic preparations for upcoming championships.

Teenage fencing prodigy Inkosi Brou has achieved a significant milestone for Nigeria by securing the nation’s first medal at the 2025 African Junior Fencing Championships in Luanda, Angola. Brou, who is the grandson of the former Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili, displayed his exceptional skills and commitment, having earlier displayed his talent at the Almaty Saber FIE Junior World Cup this past February.

Competing as a representative of Nigeria from abroad, Brou’s remarkable performance not only highlighted his individual capabilities but also contributed to enhancing Nigeria’s prominence in international fencing. Alongside him, fellow Nigerian fencer Peluola Akinbamiro faced an unfortunate setback in her quest for success, missing her first bout due to a late scheduling change.

Nigerian Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel commented, “This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian Fencing Federation, showcasing our strides in the sport through intense preparations and notable achievements.” Brou’s dedication to the sport, despite being born and raised in the United States, reflects a passionate commitment to representing Nigeria on a global stage.

With a promising start to 2025 and Brou’s historic medal win, the Nigerian Fencing Federation aims to further develop the sport and support its athletes towards elevating Nigeria’s international standing in fencing. Following the championships in Angola, the Federation is making strategic preparations for upcoming competitions, including the Wuxi World Championship in April and the Senior African Championship in June.

Inkosi Brou’s bronze medal at the 2025 African Junior Fencing Championships signifies a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s presence in the sport, showcasing the talents of its athletes on an international platform. The Nigerian Fencing Federation is committed to nurturing this momentum through strategic initiatives and support for its athletes, as evidenced by their plans for future competitions.
