White Army Claims Control Over Nasir Town Following Intense Fighting

The White Army claims full control of Nasir in Upper Nile State after fierce clashes with government forces, reportedly resulting in numerous casualties. A leader from the White Army stated they successfully expelled the SSPDF from the town and highlighted the seizure of military equipment. Information on casualties remains unclear as government officials gather more details, with the SSPDF yet to comment officially on the situation.
A militia group known as the White Army has declared its control over the strategically significant town of Nasir in Upper Nile State, South Sudan, following intense clashes with government forces. The White Army, primarily composed of armed Nuer youth, announced this claim on Tuesday, stating that it successfully seized the town after prolonged fighting with the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).
Ter Chuol Gatkuoth, a leader of the White Army in Nasir, informed Radio Tamazuj that they had managed to expel government troops. He remarked, “We clashed with government soldiers this morning and chased them away. They are now in the bushes,” asserting their control over the town and the military barracks. The group reportedly confiscated heavy machine guns and a transport barge during this operation.
Gatkuoth further noted that numerous SSPDF soldiers were reportedly killed, although he did not have exact figures for their casualties. He stated, “Those killed from the side of the White Army are more than 21 killed. However, I have no precise information on the number of soldiers killed on the SSPDF.”
Upper Nile State Information Minister James Basha validated the ongoing conflict in Nasir, indicating that fighting began on Monday with clashes persisting into Tuesday. He confirmed some casualties but mentioned that details were still being compiled.
The SSPDF has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. In a short message on Facebook, SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang indicated that the military was currently unable to provide information on the security situation in Nasir and its vicinity.
Nasir, located near the Ethiopian border, has been a focal point of unrest in South Sudan. The White Army’s involvement in this recent conflict raises significant concerns regarding escalating violence in Upper Nile State, a region that has faced instability since 2013.
The White Army’s declaration of control over Nasir signals a troubling escalation of violence in Upper Nile State, as the group actively engages in conflict against government forces. With significant casualties reported on both sides and the possibility of further unrest evident, this situation requires close monitoring. Official confirmations from the SSPDF remain pending, adding uncertainty to the ongoing conflict.
