Mushfiqur Rahim, veteran wicketkeeper for Bangladesh, has announced his retirement from ODIs after 19 years following a challenging Champions Trophy campaign. With 7,795 runs and a distinguished career, he thanked his supporters in his farewell message.
Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh’s experienced wicketkeeper, has officially announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after a disappointing end to their Champions Trophy campaign. This announcement was made via his Instagram account where the 37-year-old expressed his decision, citing several recent challenges. He stated, “I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today. Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty.”
In his retirement post, Mushfiqur referenced his struggles over the past weeks, emphasizing his acceptance of destiny. He also conveyed gratitude towards his supporters, family, and friends, stating, “Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years.” Throughout his remarkable 19-year career, Mushfiqur Rahim became one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished cricketers, making his ODI debut in August 2006 against Zimbabwe.
Throughout his career, he accumulated an impressive total of 7,795 runs in 274 ODIs, achieving an average of 36.42, which included nine centuries and 49 half-centuries. He stands as Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer in ODIs, just behind Tamim Iqbal, who holds 8,357 runs. Mushfiqur was also an effective wicketkeeper, completing 243 catches and recording 56 stumpings.
His final performance saw him beginning his last campaign with a golden duck against Axar Patel. His subsequent game was also unfavorable, yielding only two runs against Michael Bracewell. Unfortunately, rain in Rawalpindi cut short his final opportunity to contribute further to Bangladesh’s ODI history.
Mushfiqur Rahim’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious ODI career characterized by dedication and significant contributions to Bangladesh’s cricketing legacy. His remarkable statistics and steadfast commitment to his country establish him as one of the sport’s greats. His departure not only leaves a void on the team but also in the hearts of fans and fellow players who have supported him throughout his journey.
