According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, the M23 fighters took 116 patients from CBCA and 15 from Heal Africa, primarily individuals suspected of being Congolese army soldiers or members of the pro-government Wazalendo militia.
Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the U.N. Human Rights Office, expressed profound concern over the situation, stating, “It is deeply distressing that M23 is snatching patients from hospital beds in coordinated raids and holding them incommunicado in undisclosed locations.” She urged for the immediate release of the abducted individuals. The M23 rebels have intensified their activities throughout eastern Congo, resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths due to escalating violence.
Initially gaining control of Goma, M23 has expanded its influence within the region, capturing Bukavu, the second-largest city. This area is noteworthy for its substantial natural resources, including gold and coltan, a mineral essential for manufacturing capacitors in consumer electronics. The rebels are reportedly backed by around 4,000 Rwandan troops, according to U.N. experts, and have expressed intentions to threaten targets as far as Kinshasa, the capital.
Rwanda has leveled accusations against Congo for allegedly recruiting ethnic Hutu fighters tied to the infamous genocide of 1994. The M23 rebels claim to advocate for the rights of Tutsis and those of Rwandan origin within Congo, asserting their mission is to transform Congo into a thriving state, although many analysts argue this is merely a facade for Rwanda’s ambitions. Recently, violence further escalated in Bukavu, where explosions at a rally for M23 leaders resulted in at least 11 fatalities and numerous injuries.
