Iranian Envoy Critiques Western Pressure Campaign Against Tehran

Iranian envoy Naziri Asl criticized Western sanctions and censure resolutions during the IAEA Board meeting, stating their ineffectiveness and counterproductive nature. He asserted that Iran’s reduction of commitments aligns with the JCPOA’s provisions, and emphasized the legitimacy of Iran’s actions in response to Western violations. He urged full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to preserve the nuclear agreement as the Termination Day approaches.

During a recent meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, Iranian envoy Naziri Asl criticized Western nations for promoting censure resolutions against Iran while imposing sanctions based on unproven allegations regarding its nuclear ambitions. He pointed to the failure of these nations to meet their commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), particularly following the United States’ withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 and the subsequent failure of France, Germany, and Britain to rectify the situation.

Naziri Asl emphasized that Iran’s decision to reduce some of its obligations under the JCPOA is a necessary response to the breaches by other parties, asserting that this action is justified according to Articles 26 and 36 of the agreement. He stated that Iran will only cease its remedial measures if sanctions imposed by the US, European Union, and the three European signatories are removed in a verifiable and effective manner.

He remarked, “Experience has shown that the policy of pressure pursued by certain parties is not only ineffective but also counterproductive.” The envoy further dismissed any attempts by European nations to invoke the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism, claiming that since the E3 has violated both the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA, they lack the authority to address Iran’s actions.

Naziri Asl asserted, “The E3 cannot pursue the same legal course against Iran, as such an action contradicts both the purpose of the dispute resolution mechanism within the JCPOA and the fundamental principles of international law among civilized nations.” He deemed any effort to invoke the snapback mechanism as “legally baseless, unjust, and strongly rejected.”

With the imminent ‘Termination Day’ of the JCPOA approaching, he urged IAEA member states to concentrate on implementing Resolution 2231 to protect the nuclear agreement. He warned against undermining the years of diplomatic efforts invested in the JCPOA, stating, “It is our responsibility to preserve this achievement.”

The envoy reiterated Iran’s position against the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, which it considers contrary to its ideological and strategic principles. Termination Day, initially slated for October 2025, indicates the lifting of remaining UN sanctions, concluding the restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. European powers are contemplating activating the snapback mechanism, citing Iran’s measures as justification, a process that has previously encountered rejection from the international community.
