Prakash Karat Critiques Trump and Modi Governments for Promoting Far-Right Ideologies

CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat accuses Modi and Trump of promoting ‘far-right’ ideologies. He criticizes India’s ties with the US, alleging it has aligned the country with oppressors, particularly through arms exports to Israel. He raises concerns about neo-fascism in India and urges resistance against these trends.
Prakash Karat, the CPI(M) Politburo coordinator, has recently accused the governments of Donald Trump and Narendra Modi of promoting ‘far-right’ ideologies. During a state party conference, he criticized Trump as an imperialist focused on consolidating American global dominance while labeling Modi’s administration as a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ exhibiting ‘neo-fascist’ tendencies.
Karat emphasized that India’s alignment with the United States has placed it among oppressors, highlighting arms exports to Israel amid its conflict with Palestine. He contended that India’s membership in the Quad—comprising the US, Japan, and Australia—is strategically aimed solely at countering China, expressing concern that this could isolate India from developing nations as US aggressiveness under Trump escalates.
He remarked, “The path this government is taking and its external policies are a reflection of its character, which we in our political resolution have termed as a Hindutva Corporate regime that is displaying neo-fascist characteristics,” as quoted by PTI. Furthermore, Karat criticized the opposition Congress in Kerala for attempting to undermine CPI(M)’s opposition to the BJP and RSS, accusing them of manipulating terms like ‘neo-fascist’ for political gain.
Moreover, he noted the violence faced by CPI(M) workers allegedly at the hands of RSS activists in Kerala, underlining the reality of opposition to the BJP in the state. He explained that contemporary ‘neo-fascism’ incorporates elements of historical fascism along with features of neo-liberalism, asserting the unique role of the Hindutva ideology of the RSS. In warning against the rise of ‘neo-fascism,’ Karat cautioned that failure to address it could lead to full-fledged fascism. Alternatively, he likened Trump’s imperialist actions to those of 19th-century figures who sought territorial control.
In summary, Prakash Karat’s assertions shed light on the perceived rise of ‘far-right’ ideologies under the Trump and Modi administrations. The accusations against India’s foreign alignment and its implications underscore a broader concern regarding the political trajectory of the nation. Karat’s warnings about ‘neo-fascism’ emphasize the need for vigilance in safeguarding democratic values.
