The report highlights that at least 24 individuals were killed during attacks in the Mbomou and Haut-Mbomou prefectures in October last year and January, many of whom were victims of summary executions.
The attacks involved armed groups, including members associated with the WTA, previously part of the Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé group. Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, reported grave abuses primarily targeting Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees, with documented cases of sexual violence, forced labor, torture, and property looting.
Al-Kheetan underscored the necessity for justice regarding these “horrible crimes,” affirming the UN’s readiness to collaborate with local authorities to bolster human rights and combat impunity. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged clarification on the WTA group’s connections with the armed forces and insisted on transparency regarding its operations. He proposed disarming the group if its actions cannot be clarified.
The CAR has experienced enduring instability and violence, predominantly along religious and ethnic lines. Current assessments reveal that one in five individuals are either internally displaced or have fled the country due to ongoing conflict, severely affecting essential services such as education and healthcare. In response, MINUSCA has amplified its initiatives to safeguard civilians and aid the restoration of state authority in the afflicted areas.
