The president emphasized that these archives validate claims that the CIA engineered the coup while Nkrumah was abroad, leading to instability in Ghana.
President Mahama articulated that Nkrumah had envisioned a self-sufficient and industrial Ghana. He expressed that the coup, which occurred on February 24, 1966, ended Nkrumah’s vision, resulting in decades of political instability and military rule in the country.
The Independence Day celebration commemorates 68 years since Ghana’s liberation from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957. Under Nkrumah’s leadership, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence, heralding a new chapter for the region and the continent.
This year’s event was characterized by its modesty to mitigate costs, a departure from previous grand ceremonies at the iconic Black Star Square. The theme for the celebration, “Reflect, Review, Reset,” included a Military Guard of Honour and performances from school children, alongside a poetry recital from a high school student.
Similar modest celebrations are anticipated across various Municipal and District Assemblies throughout Ghana. The government has opted to revert to centralized celebrations after previously hosting events on a rotational basis to enhance inclusivity and decentralization, primarily for budgetary reasons.
