Apple has secured local content certificates for 20 products in Indonesia, including the iPhone 16. Indonesia has granted Apple local content certificates for 20 of its products, including the iPhone 16, as per a statement by an industry ministry spokesperson. However, the company requires additional permits from other ministries before it is permitted to sell these phones in the Indonesian market. These certificates were awarded following Apple’s recent commitment of over $300 million in investment within Indonesia, which includes setting up component manufacturing plants and a research and development center.

Despite the certification, Apple faces challenges, as sales of the iPhone 16 were prohibited last year due to the company’s inability to fulfill local component requirements. The Indonesian Ministry of Industry has issued certificates for 11 phone models and nine tablets after confirming compliance with the local content rules, as noted by spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arief. In addition, Apple must obtain permits from both the communications and digital ministry and the trade ministry before proceeding with sales in the country.

Discussions between Apple and Indonesian ministries have been described as complex and prolonging by the industry minister. Data from research firm Canalyst highlights that Apple did not rank among the top five smartphone brands in Indonesia in the third quarter of the previous year, underscoring the competitive landscape in the region. The path to market for Apple’s new products remains uncertain until all necessary permits are completed and approved.
