PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit to Mauritius: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to undertake a two-day state visit to Mauritius from March 11 to March 12, during which he will attend the national day celebrations as the chief guest. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be exchanged between India and Mauritius during this significant visit.

The visit symbolizes the robust and enduring relationship between India and Mauritius, highlighting their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across various sectors. An Indian defence contingent, including a ship from the Indian Navy, will participate in the national day celebrations, further showcasing the cooperation between the two nations.

Modi is traveling to Mauritius at the invitation of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Modi will engage with the President of Mauritius, hold meetings with senior officials, and interact with leaders from various political parties on the island. He is also set to engage with members of the Indian-origin community and inaugurate a civil service college and an area health center funded by India.

The exchange of MoUs is anticipated to bolster the already strong ties between India and Mauritius, which are deeply rooted in shared historical, cultural, and people-to-people connections. Mauritius plays a pivotal role in India’s Vision SAGAR, emphasizing security and growth for all in the region. Approximately 70 percent of Mauritius’ population is of Indian descent, reinforcing the close relationship.

India has been one of Mauritius’ largest trading partners since 2005. In the financial year 2022-2023, Indian exports to Mauritius amounted to USD 462 million, while Mauritian exports to India reached USD 91.50 million, resulting in a total trade volume of USD 554 million. This trade volume reflects a significant growth of 132 percent over 17 years, increasing from USD 206 million in 2005-06 to USD 554 million in 2022-23, as per official data.
