India and US Advance Bilateral Trade Talks, Rana Extradition Confirmed Soon
India and the US are advancing talks on a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) to enhance trade relations. MEA spokesperson confirmed the upcoming extradition of Tahawwur Rana related to the 26/11 attacks. Prime Minister Modi is also set to visit Mauritius for national day celebrations.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Mr. Randhir Jaiswal, conveyed that India and the United States are advancing discussions on a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). This agreement aims to strengthen trade relations by enhancing goods and services, increasing market access, and minimizing tariff and non-tariff barriers, thereby improving supply chain integration between the two nations.
Jaiswal noted that during the Prime Minister’s visit to the US in February 2025, plans were announced for negotiating the BTA. The Commerce and Industries Minister has engaged with his US counterparts, facilitating momentum in discussions aimed at this mutually beneficial agreement.
Regarding the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a primary accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Jaiswal assured that the process is underway, with close collaboration between the Indian government and the United States. He referenced President Trump’s previous remarks on the matter and highlighted that formalities for the extradition are being actively pursued.
In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Mauritius on March 11 and 12. This visit is significant as he will join the nation’s national day celebrations as the chief guest. The Indian defense forces will also be represented at the celebrations, following an invitation from Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam of Mauritius.
The ongoing discussions between India and the United States regarding the Bilateral Trade Agreement signify a significant step towards enhancing economic collaboration. Furthermore, the anticipated extradition of Tahawwur Rana reflects the commitment of both nations to address key security issues.
