White House Suspends Tariffs on USMCA-Compliant Imports Until April

The White House recently announced the suspension of tariffs on imports compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April 2. This decision now includes products from Canada, extending the earlier measure for Mexican goods. Notably, this pause follows an exemption for car imports from both nations, highlighting a broader scope of relief for trade under the agreement.

President Donald J. Trump stated, “Today, President Donald J. Trump announced adjustments to tariffs imposed on imports from Canada and Mexico in recognition of the structure of the automotive supply chain that strives to bring production into America,” according to a White House statement. Approximately half of Mexico’s imports to the U.S. meet USMCA standards, while nearly 40% of Canadian imports do as well, offering significant relief for the food industry, particularly agricultural products.

The temporary suspension alleviates potential price hikes on essential goods such as avocados, tequila, and tomatoes from Mexico, as well as oats and canola oil from Canada. Zippy Duvall, President of the American Farm Bureau Federation, urged President Trump to resolve trade issues permanently, emphasizing the importance of maintaining markets and ensuring farmers have adequate supplies.

Despite the tariff pause on compliant goods, a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports is still scheduled to commence on March 12. The U.S. intends to initiate a universal reciprocal tariff policy on April 2, the same date the current pause concludes. Furthermore, during discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump acknowledged her cooperation on critical issues such as fentanyl trafficking and migration policies.
