In Bahia Blanca, Argentina, catastrophic flooding occurred due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of at least ten individuals and the evacuation of over one thousand residents. The torrential downpour inundated homes, hospitals, and infrastructure, prompting officials to cut power to mitigate the risk of electric shocks. Mayor Federico Susbielles reported that 1,321 individuals were evacuated, while the national government issued emergency aid amounting to 10 billion pesos (approximately 9.2 million dollars).
The city witnessed an extraordinary rainfall totaling over 400 millimeters (15 inches) within a few hours, a figure that equals the average annual rainfall. Javier Alonso, the security minister for Buenos Aires province, described this phenomenon as “something unprecedented”. In comparison, the city’s greatest storm in 1930 only brought 175 millimeters of rain, illustrating the severity of the current situation.
As a result of the flooding, Bahia Blanca’s airport closed, and authorities dispatched helicopters, canoes, ambulances, and trucks laden with essential supplies to assist the affected population. The coast guard actively participated in rescue operations using inflatable boats. Residents reported alarming conditions, including Flavia Viera Romero, who noted that approximately 1.5 meters of water flooded her home, requiring her to seek refuge with her family in a truck.
The Jose Penna hospital, a key medical facility, also faced significant challenges as floodwaters intruded into its wards, leading to the emergency evacuation of patients and staff. Affected individuals, such as nurses and doctors, were seen evacuating with sick infants in tow. The streets of Bahia Blanca, which slant towards the sea, contributed to the flood’s intensity, as tidal waters exacerbated the situation by sweeping away vehicles and debris.
Bahia Blanca has unfortunately experienced numerous climate disasters, including a deadly windstorm in December 2023, which claimed 13 lives and caused extensive destruction in the area. Presently, the community remains vigilant as meteorological services warn of the potential for additional storms
