Paraguay’s Minister of Women Cynthia Figueredo urged ongoing efforts for equity and justice at a ceremony ahead of International Women’s Day. She celebrated women’s achievements and called for collective action while highlighting concerning domestic violence statistics. Additionally, health officials reported a rise in respiratory illnesses, advising preventive measures to combat virus spread.

During a recent ceremony in Paraguay, Minister of Women Cynthia Figueredo emphasized the crucial role of women in advancing equity and justice, in light of the upcoming International Women’s Day on Saturday. She called upon citizens to engage in collective efforts to foster a society characterized by equality and respect. Figueredo stated that demonstrations like today’s should motivate everyone to unite in their fight for these values, declaring, “Let us celebrate the power of being women and let us move forward, because together we are unstoppable.”

At the National Photography Contest “Mujeres que Hacen,” ten women were honored, and Figueredo underscored the importance of women’s contributions to societal development, celebrating their achievements and urging participation alongside men. “This year is a bold call to action in favor of women, adolescent girls, and girls around the world,” she affirmed, marking a significant stance during this pivotal time.

However, recent statistics from the Public Prosecutor’s Office reported alarming figures in domestic violence, with 7,513 cases and two confirmed femicides occurring in the first two months of 2025. Furthermore, there were 14 attempted femicides reported along with numerous incidents of sexual violence, highlighting the ongoing struggles women face.

In addition to these concerns, health officials observed an increase in respiratory illnesses, with 11,410 influenza consultations and 1,363 severe acute respiratory infections hospitalizations reported, although still under the alert threshold. The health ministry has recommended masks and timely medical consultations to mitigate the transmission of various viruses, including rhinovirus and SARS-CoV-2.
