Qatari Prime Minister Warns of Water Crisis Following Possible Attacks on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

In a recent interview, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar, expressed grave concerns regarding the potential environmental repercussions of any attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. He warned that the Persian Gulf states, including Qatar, would exhaust their water supply within three days due to contamination following an attack on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. The prime minister explained that the entire region would be severely affected, stating, “This would be basically entirely contaminated… The whole country would run out of water in three days.”
Al Thani acknowledged the complicated relationship between Qatar and Iran, revealing that despite having fought against Iranian forces in Syria for fourteen years, there exists a necessity for diplomatic engagement due to geographical proximity. He recounted an interaction with a U.S. congressman who urged for a severance of ties with Tehran, stating that such a move would be impractical given the countries’ closeness.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also voiced concerns regarding the implications of hostilities directed at its nuclear sites. He warned of the potential onset of a new regional conflict, stating, “My assumption is that in this case (a likely attack against the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities), we will enter into a widespread war in the region, a catastrophe that no one, neither in the region nor outside the region, wants.” Iran has previously retaliated against Israeli actions, showcasing its military capabilities by targeting strategic locations with missiles.
